Boab Health Services’ Mental Health Program services communities in the Kimberley region

The service has a focus on primary care working with clients experiencing mild to moderate mental health issues using evidence-based focused psychological interventions.

The Boab Health Services Mental Health team is staffed by professionals who are qualified for work in mental health and psychological issues. Services can be delivered to individuals or to groups.

Criteria for Service

  • Over 18 years of age
  • Have a diagnosable mental health issue or are at risk of developing one
  • Alcohol and other drugs are not the predominant issue to be addressed
  • Capacity to engage in and benefit from short-term therapy
  • Ability to attend structured appointments
  • Are not requiring court reports or reports for workers compensation claims
  • Non-mandated clients only
  • Acute psychological services or crisis response services are generally not provided by our program

Referral Pathway

  • Referrals are required from a GP
  • Other health professionals can make a provisional referral however a named GP is a requirement
  • All referrals should be sent to either the counselling team email on MMEX or via fax on 9192 7999
  • Referrals should be made on the Boab Mental Health teams referral form. Please remember to tick the correct box for the service you require and provide client contact details including a telephone number, PO box or street address

Referral Process

  • Once a referral is received a letter will be sent to the client and the referrer confirming receipt and approximate wait times
  • Once a mental health practitioner becomes available they will contact the client directly to arrange an assessment
  • After assessment, the mental health practitioner will either offer the client individual counselling, self-help materials or signpost the client to a more appropriate service if we are unable to offer assistance

The team offers a range of evidence-based treatments and self-help strategies to help people with:

  • Depression
  • Anxiety and phobias
  • Panic disorders
  • Anger management
  • Stress management
  • Grief and trauma
  • Social and emotional wellbeing issues
  • Other mental health issues

Service Locations

  • Broome daily from 8am to 4pm
  • Dampier Peninsula communities at 3 days every 3 weeks
  • Derby every fortnight Monday to Thursday 8am to 4pm
  • Halls Creek one week every 3 weeks
  • Kalumburu every fortnight either Tuesday or Thursday
  • The Katjungka every fortnight Monday to Friday 8am to 4 pm
  • Kununurra daily from 8am to 4pm
  • Warmun every fortnight Tuesday and Wednesday
