Boab Health Celebrates National Close the Gap Day

Boab Health Services will be celebrating National Close the Gap Day on Thursday 19th March with a community event to be held in the park outside the Shire of Broome Library on Hamersley Street. The event will include information bays from a host of local agencies, healthy food and live music to promote Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health equality.

National Close the Gap Day events are held around the country to raise awareness of the gap in health and life expectancy between Indigenous and Non – Indigenous Australians. Broome’s event has been initiated by Boab Health’s Closing the Gap team who work with Aboriginal people across the Kimberley to improve access to primary health care services.

Whilst acknowledging that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, as a whole, experience disproportionate levels of disadvantage and poorer health compared with other Australians, the event will highlight some of the Broome agencies who are trying to close this gap.

For example Boab Health‘s Closing the Gap team provides care coordination services to help clients with chronic disease understand their health issues, organise and attend appointments and access medical aids recommended by health professionals.

The event will be running from 9:30am – 1pm on Thursday 19th March in front of the Shire of Broome Library. An event is also being organised by our Kununurra  Closing the Gap team to be held in White Gum Park.
